Question: Don't you have to be a good person to be a Christian?

Answer: So many people think  that churches are full of "goody two shoes", people who are somehow without issues and problems. This is so far from the truth!

The Ten Commandments given to Moses were God's plan for the best way to live a life pleasing to Him and incidentally would make for the best relationships with people as well. However, even when we don't go around murdering and stealing we would find it impossible in reality to keep all the laws, and if we break one we have broken The Law , no sin is acceptable compared to another;  if you drop a plate and chip a piece off it, the plate is broken, only a bit, granted, but still  broken; likewise the Commandments, only a little one, but the law has been broken.  Even if we think an unkind thought, hate someone in our heart or tell a "little white lie"  it is not what God would want...as no human is perfect, no person could live the perfect life and so really the Commandments show us the ideal and what God does not like but it an unattainable standard for a mere human to fulfill.

God knows we cannot manage alone though, He sent his son Jesus to bring about a new and  better way to be at peace with God, It is hard to understand but Jesus came into this world with a clear purpose. That was to teach people that God's kingdom was real and accessible and not one made of wealth and power and possessions, but a spiritual, eternal home . We are taught that there can be no sin in God's kingdom, not that it is not allowed but that it does not exist..in that case how can a person be able to get into this kingdom?

Well, a person alone cannot. When Jesus died on the cross about 2000 years ago , he paid the price for the sins of mankind. He died a perfect  willing sacrifice  to bear the punishment that each of us deserve for our sinful selfish natures. By doing this he made a way for us to be at peace with God the Father . We are still not perfect, we are still going to make mistakes but IF we acknowledge what Jesus did for us and trust him, if we recognise His role and that he is the Saviour that we need  to make us  acceptable to God, then His righteousness and goodness covers us and when God the Father looks on us He sees us  as acceptable because we are followers of Jesus.

God does not want any person to miss out on His love and provision for eternity, so the way is so simple, trust Jesus and what his death was about , ask him to come into your life and help you day to day.  Just to reassure you that this is possible, before His death Jesus performed many miracles to prove  his right to be called the Son of God, then  after His terrible death on the cross proved His power over life and death by being resurrected and appearing to many, many people , telling them more about the kingdom of God until the day he ascended into heaven, alive and full of power and glory.  When he left he promised he would send a "helper"  the Holy Spirit to be with his people always . This is the Holy Spirit of God who comes into each believer and empowers them to want to be close to God, to want to work for the church and show the love of God to others.  The work is to spread the good news of Jesus' love to all mankind so that no one misses out on the way to be assured of an eternity in God's family. Much has been done throughout history in the name of the church and religion- read what Jesus taught and you will see these events were far from what God wants - Man has done terrible things thinking he is doing God's work- you cannot force anyone to become a Christian, God's love  shown through Jesus draws people to Him, not force and violence.

So to get back to your original queston...churches like ours are not full of " goody two- shoes", they are full of people who have realised their weaknesses and their faults and have asked Jesus into their lives, They have said sorry to God for what they know are mistakes made, and are living lives full of gratefulness for the forgiveness for sins that comes when you trust Jesus Christ. We still make mistakes and we still have problems, but we have an anchor for our lives that helps us deal with situations and gives us hope for the future when the world we live in is getting worse by the day.

Don't take our word for it though, talk to Jesus yourself, ask Him to come into your life and You will know the difference!
